An implant-retained overdenture is a removable dental prosthesis supported by residual oral tissues and retained by dental implants. This concept has been successfully used for over 30 years. Implant-retained overdentures demonstrate it improved retention and stability when compared to conventional dentures.
There are a few different implant-retained overdentures, but they all have the same basic structure. The overdenture looks like a traditional denture; it has a gum-colored base and an entire arch of artificial teeth. However, looking at the bottom side of the overdenture, you will find that it has small metal attachments. The attachments allow the overdenture to “snap” onto and off dental implants placed throughout the jawbone at strategic locations. Thus, an implant-retained overdenture is much more secure than its traditional counterpart.
BENEFITS OF COMBINING DENTURES & DENTAL IMPLANTS
You can expect your implant-retained overdentures to provide you with some significant benefits:
❖ Because the overdenture is removable, it will be easy for you to maintain a clean mouth. Not only can you keep the denture itself clean, but you can also keep the area around your implants free of harmful plaque and bacteria
❖ An implant overdenture retains its fit much longer than a traditional denture
❖ Dental implants have chewing solid power. You will not have to worry about your overdenture destabilizing, even when eating crunchy or chewy foods
